The Truth About Negative Feelings

  • By JuliaFerry LifeCoach
  • In My Journey

In college, we had a debate about “What a person resists will grow in size.”

So many bury their negative emotions and never deal with them, or even begin to understand them. Making it a blockage or fester over time.

More negative emotions at to it. Making it overwhelming at times to deal with the cause.

HILARY JACOBS HENDEL   wrote, “our minds and bodies use creative tactics—including muscular constriction and holding our breath.”

This can lead to anxiety and depression.

What if we let the negative emotion in and find a way to deal with it?

Finding another way to look at it.

Not long ago a winter storm came through and a massive power surge went through our home.  We were also without power for hours.

Fear set in the lightbulbs popping. The cold sets in. The darkness.

I couldn’t sleep but Charlie could. My body ached, the pain getting worse. I did my deep breathing and meditation. I did fall asleep and when we woke up the electricity was on.

My brain thought about how everything was going wrong what to do!

FEAR, ANXIETY, AND STRESS!!!

Once again, I did my breathing got out of bed, ready to see the worse.

Wasn’t as bad as I had imagined. We didn’t need to replace everything.

We had to replace:

Washing Machine

Dishwasher

Stove

Tv

Coffeemaker

Video cards on Charlie’s computer

My heating pad.

Lightbulbs

Okay, so we maxed out our credit cards replacing all the items we needed.

Anxiety on how to pay it all off.

Insurance was a $1000.00 deductible. That was easy enough, the washer and stove cost well over the deductible. Insurance cut us a check but wasn’t near enough to pay off all the credit cards. So, we used our savings to pay down to where we can afford monthly payments.

The hymn onward Christion soldiers was playing in my head.

Does a song come in your head to help bring back the calm?

Action and plans took away the fears, anxiety, and stress.

As I look back, I knew I wouldn’t be getting the new appliances I wanted. BUT I did get better appliances without all the many functions that confused me.

So, in a weird way, I am very thankful for the storm.

I love the new stove! So what, it doesn’t have a timer on it and I have to turn the nobs! I like it better it was something I grew up with.

The washer barrel was the same size but the whole machine was shorter so I can reach the bottom of the barrel!

The Dishwasher I love. It is smaller but just the right size for Charlie and me and my dishes sparkle!

When I started to breathe and make plans on what needed to be done in what order. My anxiety, fear, and stress diminished.

Negative emotions brought me to where I needed to act and move forward to get things done.

I choose not to bury the negative emotions but to use them.

All the thoughts of what if we don’t have power for days.

I reminded myself of all my camping experiences and the bad snowstorm where we didn’t have power for a week.

We were fine, gas stove to cook on, snow to keep food cold, snow to melt for water and boil, had the kerosine heater to keep us warm. I had made plenty of candles to use.

My past prepared me for my future and how to handle the present.

Also, my classes in being a life coach really helped me!

So negative thoughts aren’t always bad. We can learn from them. They teach us how to move forward.

If you cannot get past your negative emotions, then reach out to someone.

May you face your fears, anxiety, and stress and find the blessings they have brought you!

Julia
